When I became homeless, I was surfing at my friends’ flats, wandering every day from flat-to-flat seeking help on where to spend nights. So many questions came into my mind, I couldn’t eat and sleep well. I had a headache every day, taking Paracetamol 2-4 times a day.
I lost my confidence and personality; it was really very hard to see my expectations flying away before my sight. But my friends encouraged me to seek help at Scottish Refugee Council; from there I got hope, help and assurance.
“I just couldn’t believe it after months and months of sofa surfing at friends’ flats, moving from one friend to another, sleeping on a sofa, I felt hopeful, I felt very excited, overjoyed, and thanked God for answering my prayers.”

When I got the offer of accommodation, I was very happy and when the day came for me to move into Cedar Street, I was picked up in a car something I have never experienced. I just couldn’t believe it after months and months of sofa surfing at friends’ flats, moving from one friend to another, sleeping on a sofa, I felt hopeful, I felt very excited, overjoyed, and thanked God for answering my prayers.
I received a warm welcome in a nice and clean flat, well equipped with a double bed for myself. I also received £50 cash weekly to help with my everyday costs and a bus pass.
I will never forget what Refugee Sanctuary Scotland has done for me even though I haven’t been a good person, but the organisation didn’t reject me. Thank you so much for caring about me. Anytime I needed help, you provided support and helped. The support from the Law Clinic was also extremely helpful in assisting with my Fresh Claim. I am very grateful.
